Students raise funds through Red Cross Cold Campout

Halifax high school student Samantha Miller will be honoured with the Canadian Red Cross Young Humanitarian Award on October 24 for her outstanding volunteer efforts. Her decade-long involvement in charitable work is deserving enough of the accolades, but she’s leading an even more ambitious project.

Before Samantha gets up on stage to accept her award, she and some 15 other students will be spending 24 hours camping out on the Garrison Grounds in Halifax as part of the Red Cross Cold Campout fundraiser. The campout gets underway at noon on October 18.

Students organize a bake sale to raise funds for the Red Cross Cold CampoutThe students hope to raise no less than $100,000 to help the Red Cross in Nova Scotia be better equipped and prepared to help people affected by disasters. They have been holding bake sales, knocking on doors of big corporations and soliciting their friends and family for donations. Donations can be made online at

The Red Cross Cold Campout is a 24-hour simulation of what people affected by a disaster often face: the need for shelter, food, water, emergency supplies. These are the emergency services offered by the Red Cross in a real-life disaster.

You can follow the hashtag #coldcampout on Twitter later this week for more on the event.

The Red Cross in Nova Scotia will also be honouring Dr. Martha Jodrey for her significant charitable contributions at the upcoming Humanitarian Awards.
