The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

BURKINA FASO: The Belgian Red Cross and Burkinabe Red Cross are working on a nutrition program in Sebba, Yagha province.  The Sebba nutrition project covers 23 villages and employs three nurses as well as community educators.  Activities consist of promotional sessions on the importance of breastfeeding, good nutrition practices and mass screening for global acute malnutrition.

PHILIPPINES: While the floodwater has receded in most areas, more than 200,000 people are still living in evacuation centres, unable to return home. To meet the immediate water needs of flood affected communities, the Red Cross is trucking in fresh water supplies, providing water containers to store clean water, and setting up mobile water facilities in evacuation centres. Complementing these efforts to provide clean water, the Red Cross is deploying volunteers to clean up waste, distribute hygiene kits containing key items such as soap and towels, and conduct hygiene education sessions for 10,000 families.

SOMALIA: The ICRC has just completed a distribution in Mogadishu of a one-month supply of basic food aid to some 420,000 highly vulnerable people, including displaced, orphaned, elderly and disabled persons.
