Food Friday: What to cook when it’s boiling outside

They’re baaaacck! The hot temperatures that is. Once again this summer, Toronto is under an Extreme Heat Alert. And, recently, other parts of the country have also faced record high temps.

I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to do in this weather is turn on my oven – even though I love to cook. I recently came across this article on Lifehacker.com with some great tips of what to make for dinner when it’s hot out. Here are some of the highlights:

  1. No cook food – sandwiches and salads are easy to make during the extreme heat. Also, try making cold soups. I like gazpacho; it’s refreshing!
  2. Low effort, low-heat appliance cooking – such as slow cookers and microwaves can give you a warm meal without warming up your kitchen.
  3. Head outside and use your grill – summer and BBQs go together like, well, summer and BBQs. They are a natural fit. So, instead of spending time (and sweating) in your stuffy kitchen, go outside and do some grilling.

And, during this latest heat spell, don’t forget to stay hydrated. Drink lots of water, and try to add some hydrating fruits and veggies from the image above in your upcoming menus.
